John Polwhele was born in about 1605 and died in 1672 — he came from Cornwall, and spent most of his life there, settling in St Erme with his wife Anne Baskerville after a few years first (probably) at Exeter College, Oxford — the traditional college for students from the West Country — and then at Lincoln’s Inn.1 Other than that, we know almost nothing …
